Armen Sargsyan says he has no intention of joining any political party
Armen Sargsyan, the candidate of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) for Armenia's fourth president, gave his strong assurances on Thursday that he has no intention of joining any political party.
“I have to disappoint you but I am not going to become a member of any party,” Sargsyan said, commenting on a question addressed by the Yelk opposition faction MP Mane Tandilyan whether or not he intends to head the RPA list of candidate and run for the office of prime minister.
“I will not join any party, even the one of yours, Mr Pashinyan,” he added
The comments came at today’s extraordinary sitting of the Armenian National Assembly on the election of the country’s next president.
In response to another question whether or not he is concerned with the fact that he is appointed, rather than elected, to the post of Armenia’s president, Sargsyan said: “I have not drawn up the Constitution, I have only voted.”
As for the documents on his citizenship, the presidential candidate said he has published all the documents demanded from him.
Armen Sargsyan, 64, the Ambassador of Armenia to the United Kingdom and the country's former Prime Minister, was formally nominated for president of Armenia based on a signed petition from 65 MPs from RPA and coalition member ARF-Dashnaktutun factions.
