Armenian parliament adopts legislation banning the import of right-hand drive cars
Armenia's National Assembly adopted today in the second reading the draft legislation proposing a ban on the import of right-hand drive cars to Armenia. The document was backed by 61 lawmakers from the ruling coalition, while 33 MPs from opposition Yelk and Tsarukyan Alliances voted against.
Initiated by the Government, the draft law "On Temporary Ban on Import of Right-Hand Drive Vehicles" suggests prohibiting the imports of motor vehicles with right-hand drive from April 1 to October 1, 2018. The justification of the decision cites the increased risk of accidents involving these vehicles, as they are not adapted for right-hand traffic operating in Armenia.
According to estimates of Armenia's police, there are about 36,000 right-hand drive cars currently operated in the country.
The measure, however, will not have a retroactive effect, which means that the owners of all right-hand drive cars imported before April 1 will be free to use, register and re-register their vehicles.
