Putin congratulates Armenian President-elect
Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent a congratulatory telegram to Armen Sargsyan on his election as Armenia's president.
Armen Sargsyan, who candidacy was nominated by the ruling Republican Party, was backed by 90 lawmakers during the vote held in the country's National Assembly session on Friday.
President-elect Armen Sargsyan will be sworn in at a special session of the National Assembly on April 9, the date when Armenia will transfer to the parliamentary system of government, according to the new constitution adopted in referendum held in in 2015. Under the amended constitution the president holds mostly a ceremonial role and is elected for a seven-year term.
