Candidates Tournament 2018: Armenia’s Aronian draws with Mamedyarov
Armenian GM Levon Aronian played draw against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan at round 9 of FIDE Candidates Tournament 2018 underway in Berlin, Germany.
The Wesley So-Alexander Grischuk match was also drawn, the Chess Federation of Armenia told Panorama.am. Fabiano Caruana, the sole leader of the tournament, had a good chance to beat Ding Liren of China, but a couple of oversights cost him his advantage and the game ended in a draw.
The round was victorious only for Sergey Karjakin, who outplayed Vladimir Kramnik.
After nine rounds, Caruana continues to solely lead the table with 6 points. Mamedyarov comes the second with 5.5 points, followed by Grischuk, who has collected 5 points. Aronian, Kramnik and So share the 6-8 spots with 3.5 points apiece.
Wednesday is a rest day. The tournament resumes on Thursday with Round 10, with Aronian set to face Kramnik.
