Aliyev’s statement will not stand any criticism – senior Russian lawmaker on Azeri leader’s territorial claims on Armenia
First Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Committee for CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots, Konstantin Zatulin does not take seriously the latest statement by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev over territorial claims on Armenia.
“I would prefer to be maximum correct with Aliyev’s statement on Yerevan, Zangezur and other Armenian territories, since I know my comments will appear in the Azerbaijani media tomorrow,” he told a press briefing at the Armenian National Assembly on Monday.
According to the top Russian official, the Azerbaijani president weakened his own positions in the international arena by making statements of this kind.
“They were probably intended for the domestic audience given the upcoming [presidential] elections. That statement will not stand any criticism both from historical and political perspectives. It is odd how someone can treat such a statement seriously. Please, do not take it seriously, since there is nothing to comment about it,” the Russian lawmaker said.
