Opposition groups are holding rally at Liberty square in Yerevan
Several opposition groups and initiatives are holding a rally at Yerevan Liberty Square to protest the upcoming nomination of Armenia's former president Serzh Sargsyan as the country's new prime minister.
As Panorama.am reporter informed from the scene, the rally is led by Nikol Pashinyan, the head of Civil Contract party from the parliamentary opposition fraction "Yelq."
On March 31, Pashinyan launched a 14-day protest campaign against the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) to 'boycott' Sargsyan's third term in office as the next prime minister.
Pashinyan's campaign titled "My Step" was concluded today as its final stop was planned in Yerevan.
Serzh Sargsyan is expected to be nominated as the prime minister of Armenia by the ruling Republican Party that holds majority in the parliament. Under the new constitution adopted in referendum in 2015, Armenia is switching to a parliamentary system of government. The president will have mostly ceremonial role, with the real executive power vested in the prime minister.
