Police detain some opposition activists as protests continue in downtown Yerevan
Yerevan Police have detained some of the participants of a mass protest that has hit Armenia’s capital since 13 April.
The demonstrators have been detained for making ‘administrative offences’, the press service of the Armenian Police told Panorama.am.
The source did not provide further details on the number of the detained opposition activists and the reasons behind their detention, claiming they obtain no such information.
A crowd of protesters led by opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan have been demonstrating in capital Yerevan since 13 April, boycotting the ruling Republican Party of Armenia's decision to nominate Serzh Sargsyan as the next prime minister of Armenia.
On Monday, demonstrators marched through the center of the capital Yerevan and blocked streets seeking to disrupt the parliament session which is set to vote on the candidacy of the new prime minister at today’s special sitting.
