Today’s trade regimes beneficial for Armenia’s economy – Sargsyan
Armenia’s third President and the candidate for next Prime Minister Serzh Sargsyan presented his vision on the country’s economic development at today’s parliamentary Q&A session.
The Armenian National Assembly kicked off its special sitting earlier on Tuesday, with the MPs set to vote on Sargsyan’s candidacy for prime minister.
Commenting on the question of MP Gagik Melikyan over the economic policies to be pursed amid the growing tensions between Russia, the West and Iran, Sargsyan said they will continue to diversify the economy, seeking cooperation with all those who want to cooperate with the country.
“We will cooperate both on the sidelines of integration unions and in bilateral formats,” the ex-president said.
Sargsyan added Armenia will continue to cooperate with its ally Russia, as well as with Iran and the EU. "The ideology of our general policy is the following: always benefit thanks to cooperation, never attempt to benefit at the expense of the others’ conflicts,” he said.
Asked which branches of economy will ensure Armenia’s economic development, Sargsyan said: “Today’s trade regimes are beneficial for our country and its economy, and those regimes enabled Armenia to export 37% of its GDP. This is quite a serious figure we have been striving to achieve for a long time. And as you know our desire is to reach the export up to 40% in next few years, and up to 50% in the future.”
As for Armenia’s domestic policy, Sargsyan said they will continue the policies pursued by the previous governments, developing all those traditional productions existing in Armenia, starting from mining to food industry, at the same time staying focused on the technology sector.
