Yerevan Police renew intention to disperse opposition rally
The Yerevan Police have issued a new statement, renewing its intention to disperse the opposition rally led by MP Nikol Pashinyan in line with the decision adopted on Monday.
MP Pashinyan has been notified of the relevant decision this morning as prescribed by law.
The Police say that, however, the opposition MP "has ignored the demands of the decision, failed to comply with his commitments as the protest organizer and urged protesters to continue the rally and carry out actions that restrict the rights and freedoms of other people and disturb the public order".
In a statement, the Police refer to Article 33 of the law "On Freedom of Assemblies", which authorizes police officers to take special measures to disperse the rally.
“The Armenian Police are ready to fulfil their obligations at any moment, based on which we urge the participants of the protest to refrain from unlawful actions to avoid the unwanted consequences,” reads the statement.
The Police also warned journalists to keep a reasonable distance from the protesters given the possible developments in the scene.
Opposition activists continue their rally on Tuesday, blocking several streets in the center of Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, as today marks the fifth day of a mass public protest boycotting the ruling Republican Party of Armenia's decision to nominate Serzh Sargsyan as the next prime minister of Armenia.
