Opposition MP announces start of velvet revolution in Armenia
Armenian opposition MP and leader of Civil Contract Party, Nikol Pashinyan has announced the beginning of a national velvet revolution.
Addressing the large number of protesters gathered at the France Square on Tuesday, MP Pashinyan presented the current situation in the country, noting the parliament has already kicked off the ‘puppet’ sitting, while mass protests and walkouts are being staged in Armenia’s different cities and towns, including in the second largest city of Gyumri, where thousands of protesters have taken to the streets.
The opposition leader officially announced a revolutionary situation has arisen in Armenia. “And here and now I am announcing the start of a non-violent, national velvet revolution,” he said.
The protests have left the traffic paralyzed in capital Yerevan for the fifth day with protesters blocking central roads in the capital and disrupting public transportation, calling on people to voice dissent to "Serzh Sargsyan's third term in office as prime minister".
