Head of RPA fraction says Armenia should have a Prime Minister
Armenia should necessarily have a prime minister, the head of the ruling Republican party (RPA) fraction at Armenia’s National Assembly Vahram Baghdasaryan told reporters on Tuesday at a briefing.
Baghdasaryan reiterated the position of the Republicans that the fraction will not obstruct the election of the prime minister either through a boycott or lack of quorum.
To remind, Armenia’s parliament is set to elect a new prime minister with the head of “My Step” movement, the leader of anti-government protests Nikol Pashinyan nominated as the only candidate for the post. The Republican party holds majority in the parliament and Pashinyan’s election to the post is possible only at the expense of at least six votes from the Republicans.
Asked whether the Republicans will nominate their own candidate if Pashinyan’s candidacy is rejected, Baghdasaryan noted: “We have announced that RPA does not nominate own candidate. We have kept our promise. The matter has not been discussed since then. The political developments are changing rapidly, and things are unfolding every 5-10 minutes. We have no such plans and decision [nominating own candidate], yet everything depends on developments.”
