Parliament to hold new election of prime minister on May 8
The Armenian National Assembly will hold another special session on May 8 to elect a new prime minister, Speaker Ara Babloyan said in a statement.
“Guided by 140.3 Article of the Constitutional Law of the Republic of Armenia "On The Rules of Procedure of the National Assembly", I announce that the issue of prime minister’s election will be discussed on May 8, at 12:00, at a special session of the parliament to be convened with force of law,” reads the statement.
The parliament voted down opposition leader Nikol Pashinyan’s bid to become prime minister on Tuesday.
Pashinyan, the head of the Yelk opposition faction, was the sole candidate in the parliamentary vote, but he failed to secure a majority of votes following nine hours of debates.
The MP received 45 votes in favor and 56 against, eight short of the 53 he needed to be elected to the post.
The National Assembly is now set to organize a new election of the prime minister in seven days. If the parliament fails to elect PM, it will be dissolved and snap elections will be held.
