Armenian lawmakers are debating the election of a member of the Constitutional Court at today’s regular session of the National Assembly.

Gevorg Kostanyan, Chair of the Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs and Protection of Human Rights of the parliament, introduced Emil Babayan, the candidate for the position, to the parliamentarians.

After briefing the MPs on his biography, he stressed the fact Babayan has never been a member of any political party or affiliated with any political force.

“As an advisor to the Artsakh Republic president, he has presented de facto Artsakh at the works with the European Court, and, most importantly, he introduced the position of Artsakh at the 2015 official meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe,” he highlighted.

He called on all the MPs to respect Emil Babayan’s candidacy for the post regardless of their party affiliation and political views. “It is at least a fact that, irrespective of our party interests, the Nagorno-Karabakh issue is always on the agenda of us all,” he added.

Asked whether there were no other candidates to be nominated for the post to give the lawmakers an opportunity to choose between them, Kostanyan expressed conviction “there are many other young men in the country worthy of holding the post of the Constitutional Court member”, adding, however, only one person’s candidacy can be put forward for the position upon the Constitution.
