Armenian parliament fails to elect Emil Babayan as Constitutional Court judge
The Armenian National Assembly failed to elect Emil Babayan as a judge of the Constitutional Court at its regular session on Friday.
Babayan, an advisor to the Artsakh president, was the only candidate nominated for the position by Armenia’s president.
Only 54 out of the overall 105 MPs took part in the secret voting, Gagik Melikyan, chairman of the counting commission, announced, adding 51 lawmakers voted in favour of Babayan, while 3 others voted against his candidacy.
To be elected to the post, a candidate needs to receive at least 3/5th of the votes of the total number of parliamentarians (63 votes).
Prior to the voting, Tsarukyan Alliance, Armenia's second largest parliamentary faction, announced its decision not to take part in the voting, citing the “violations of numerous legal procedures” while putting forward Emil Babayan’s candidacy.
Yelk opposition faction also did not take part in the election of a Constitution Court judge.
