Nikol Pashinyan elected as Prime Minister of Armenia
The Head of Yelk fraction at the National Assembly, the leader of Armenian anti-government protests Nikol Pashinyan was elected the new prime minister of Armenia. Pashinyan’s candidacy was approved by 59 in favor and 41 opposing votes in the parliament.
The Republican party which holds majority in the National Assembly and had earlier rejected Pashinyan’s candidacy, this time provided 10 plus 1 votes in support of the opposition leader in line with the political decision to make Pashinyan as Prime Minister.
The voting results announced by the speaker of parliament Ara Babloyna were received with applause by members of Yelk, ARF-Dashnaktsutyun and Tsarukyan Alliance fractions.
To remind, under the constitutional amendments adopted in the referendum of 2015, the new cabinet will be formed within a period of 10-15 days by the Prime Minister.
