The relations between Armenia and Iran has not changed at all following the shift in power in Armenia, an expert on Iran, Vardan Voskanyan, the head of the Department of Iranian Studies of the Yerevan State University, told a news conference on Monday.

“Iran’s stance on Armenia is defined at the state level, rather than at the leadership level,” he told reporters in Yerevan.

The expert stressed that Iran’s policies towards Armenia has not changed and will never change in any case. “Armenia is a key state for Iran to ensure the country’s security form the north and Iran’s interests in the South Caucasus, which every Iranian authority understands regardless of the leadership in Armenia,” he said.    

Reflecting on yesterday’s telephone conversation held between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Mr Voskanyan cited the official Iranian sources reporting that Armenia reassured that it would in no way take part in any anti-Iranian action.

“The agenda of Armenian-Iranian relations has not changed in any way. I think we can pursue a new policy line: the prime minister’s reputation can be used, and it is time to use, to attract funds from the Diaspora to implement the Armenia-Iran railway project,” he added.
