An Open Letter to the Minister of Science and Education Arayik Harutyunyan
Mr Minister
All are obsessed with impatience to see the existing problems solved. There can be “omission” of details in the pace of presenting and addressing those problems. I am confident the citizens shared that view when they took to streets and blocked them under the new government. Viewing the blocked streets as a mean of the implementation of their rights - not a protest, I myself proceed with the format of an open letter.
Yesterday, in response to question about the money collection cases at Armenian schools ahead of the Last Bell (graduation), You noted you had discussed the matter with the Police Chief. “I call on teachers, schools principals to cease the practice [money collection], as any participant of those activities will be strictly punished,” you said.
Previously, former ministers also used to come up with statements about “strict punishment,” yet the practice continued covertly under conditions of weak will or desire of the parents.
Regretfully, the phenomenon of corruption has two sides. In this instance, the organizers - teachers and school principals have accomplices – the parents. The matter will not be solved through only warning the teachers and principals.
I urge you to display a complete political will and warn and punish the parents as well who are equally and even more responsible for not only the education of their children but also upbringing, serving as an example.
As I am set to raise all problems I see as previously, below I present some articles to your consideration published earlier.
