Yerevan State University rector hospitalized amid student protests
Rector of the Yerevan State University (YSU) Aram Simonyan has been taken to hospital amid the ongoing student protests demanding his resignation.
He was hospitalized at Nork Marash Medical Center after suffering high blood pressure, Karen Eduardovich, the hospital’s Medical Director, told Panorama.am, adding he is in stable condition at the moment.
Simonyan fell ill on Tuesday, following the meeting with the YSU Restart initiative members demanding his dismissal, which failed to give any results. The rector announced he would not ‘make any concession’ amid pressure, as the students blocked his way out of the meeting room. The students eventually let the rector leave the university, whereas they decided to stay at the YSU and stage a sit-in.
The students boycotted classes on Tuesday morning and marched through the Yerevan streets demanding the rector’s resignation, citing the ‘financial abuses and corruption schemes’ in the university. They also claim the university is politicalized.
