Armenia elected vice chair of Bureau of Intergovernmental Committee of 1970 UNESCO Convention
During the 21st Session of the Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation held at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from 30 to 31 May, Armenia has been elected Vice Chair of the Bureau of Intergovernmental Committee for a period of two years.
The Committee is the inter-governmental body of the 1970 UNESCO Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transport of Ownership of Cultural Property.
Armenia joined it since 2017 for a four-year term.
Mexico has been elected Chair of the Bureau during the session, the Armenian Foreign Ministry’s press service told Panorama.am.
The Intergovernmental Committee for Promoting the Return of Cultural Property to its Countries of Origin or its Restitution in case of Illicit Appropriation was founded in 1987 upon the respective decision adopted at the 20th session of UNESCO General Conference.
A key function of the body is to seek ways and means of facilitating bilateral negotiations for the restitution or return of cultural property to its countries of origin.
