Armenian army officer who lost both legs, one arm becomes European champion
Major of the Armenian Armed Forces, athlete Sargis Stepanyan, who lost both of his legs and one arm, has claimed a gold medal at the European Championship.
Sargis grabbed his gold medal at the PIDH-sitting event (athletes with upper limbs impairment) in the 80kg weight class.
Sargis Stepanyan was injured during a mine explosion, losing his two legs and the right arm while trying to take out his fellow serviceman from a minefield in summer 2014, when the Azerbaijani military launched a sabotage infiltration attempt at one of Armenian military posts.
Major Stepanyan has been awarded with the Armenian Defense Ministry “Marshal Baghramyan” Medal and the Medal "For Courage" by the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR).
