Armenian parliament debates stripping retired army general of immunity
The Armenian National Assembly is today debating the motion on stripping Republican MP Manvel Grigoryan of parliamentary immunity to press criminal charges against him and deprive him of liberty filed by Armenia’s Prosecutor General Arthur Davtyan.
Parliament Speaker Ara Babloyan announced that Grigoryan is also set to attend today’s session upon the Constitution, however the MP issued a message on Monday asking the parliament to vote for stripping him of immunity without his presence.
The prosecutor general presented the motion to the parliament.
Grigoryan, a retired general of the Armenian Armed Forces, was arrested on Saturday, June 16, on corruption charges, after security officers raided his property to discover and confiscate a large quantity of illegally stored firearms and explosives in his Etchmiadzin villa.
The agents of the National Security Service released a video detailing the discoveries, which also showed that Grigoryan had appropriated donated goods, including canned and preserved food, clothing, hygiene items and medicine accompanied by letters addressed to servicemen sent to them as assistance during the 2016 April War.
