Armenian parliament backs motion to launch criminal proceedings against arrested general
The Armenian National Assembly overwhelmingly approved today the motion filed by Prosecutor General Artur Davtyan on launching criminal proceedings against the Republican faction MP Manvel Grigoryan.
A total of 81 MPs voted in favour of the motion, while only 3 others voted against it, with 1 vote declared invalid, Chair of the Counting Committee Gagik Melikyan announced.
The parliament is now set to vote on approving the motion to deprive Grigoryan of liberty.
Manvel Grigoryan, a retired general of the Armenian Armed Forces, was arrested on Saturday, June 16, on corruption charges, after security officers raided his property to discover and confiscate a large quantity of illegally stored firearms, explosives and cars (including military vehicles) in his Etchmiadzin villa.
The agents of the National Security Service released a video detailing the discoveries, which also showed that Grigoryan had appropriated the goods, including canned and preserved food, clothing, hygiene items and medicine accompanied by letters addressed to servicemen which were sent to them as assistance during the 2016 April War.
