RPA ready to go to snap parliamentary elections within one year
The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is ready for snap parliamentary elections within one year, former Justice Minister, MP from RPA Davit Harutyunyan told reporters on Tuesday.
Harutyunyan’s remarks came following the regular session of the working group comprising parliamentary fractions and cabinet members set to discuss proposed amendments to the country’s Electoral Code.
To note, the cabinet earlier came up with proposals to lower the electoral threshold for elections of the National Assembly as well as replacing the rating system with an open proportional party list election system.
“The proposal to lower the electoral threshold for parties running for the parliament should seek certain aims. In countries with parliamentary systems, legislative bodies should have stable majority, while lower the threshold turns the opposite direction,” Harutyunyan said.
In Harutyunyan’s words the proposed approach does not promote the establishment of political parties, quite the opposite encourages creation of smaller political units.
To remind, the government programme - adopted by the National Assembly - contained a provision about holding snap parliamentary elections within one year at the least after necessary reforms to the Electoral Code.
