EU extends sanctions on Russia to January 2019
The EU announced on Thursday that it will once again extend the sanctions on Russia that it initially enacted in 2014 as a response to the country’s interference in Ukraine, the Financial Times reports.
Brussels said that the decision to prolong the measures until January 31, 2019 came after an update from the leaders of France and Germany to the European Council late last month.
“The Council adopted this decision today by written procedure and, in line with the rule for all such decisions, unanimously,” it said.
"The measures target the financial, energy and defence sectors, and the area of dual-use goods. They were originally introduced on 31 July 2014 for one year in response to Russia’s actions destabilising the situation in Ukraine and strengthened in September 2014," it added.
