At least 27 dead after oil tanker collides with passenger bus in Iran
At least 27 people have been killed in the city of Sanandaj, Iran, after an oil tanker collided with a passenger bus, Daily Express reports.
Sanandaj is the capital of the Kurdistan Province in Iran, and has a population of 414,069.
Video of the aftermath of the incident shows the bus and tanker engulfed in flames.
A number of people are also reported to have been severely injured during the collision.
According to reports, an oil tanker exporting south-Kurdistani oil to East-Kurdistan was involved in the crash.
One social media user commented on the crash, saying: “Kurdistan roads are very dangerous and there are always a lot of tankers and trucks on this route.”
One of the bus drivers who survived the incident reported that the bus had stopped to collect passengers behind a pickup truck, when the oil tanker crashed into the bus and burst into flames.
At least three other vehicles were also engulfed in flames.
Local reporter Kaveh Dehpouyad also claimed that protestors clashed with police following the incident.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
The local police chief indicated that a potential technical failure of the oil tanker and driving outside of permitted hours may have contributed to the crash.
A day of mourning has been declared in Sanandaj.
