The Brussels meeting between Armenian, Azerbaijani FMs to be introductory, analyst says
Armenian FM Zohrab Mnatsakanyan and Azerbaijani FM Elmar Mamedyarov are set to hold a meeting in Brussels on Wednesday, which is the first meeting of FM Mnatsakanyan with his Azerbaijani counterpart since assuming the post in May.
In an interview with Panorama.am analyst Tevan Poghosyan suggested the meeting comes in the aftermath of the Armenian revolution as the Co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group seek to organize a summit between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
In Tevanyan’s words, technically it is convenient to organize the meetings as the both ministers are in Brussels, attending the NATO Summit.
“The officials will talk to each other, while the Co-Chairs will try to clarify the positions of the sides over the NK settlement process. The Armenian side has already announced no negotiation process is feasible until confidence building measures are in place. Furthermore, Artsakh should return its right place and restore the format [of the negotiations].”
“I would specifically point to Defense Minister Tonoyan’s Tuesday publication, with idea that Armenian Armed Forces should reach level to never allow Azerbaijan to speak from a position of strength running through much of his statements,” Tevanyan stressed, adding the matter of Artsakh return to the negotiations tables should be a topic of the ministers’ meeting.
