“Yelq” Alliance to boycott the Yerevan Mayor elections
Yelq fraction of the Yerevan Council of Elders will not nominate its candidate for the upcoming elections of the mayor set on July 16. In a released statement on Saturday the Alliance informed that the fraction will also boycott the session.
“Yelq Alliance attaches importance to free, fair and transparent elections of the Yerevan Mayor. Given the fact that the 2017 elections to the Council of Elders were marred by numerous electoral irregularities and violence, we call for dissolving the current Council of Elders and hold snap elections to the City Council,” the statement by the alliance said, adding: “Consequently, Yelq Alliance will not nominate its candidate for the July 16 elections and will boycott the session of the Council of Elders.”
To remind, the need for elections for the mayor’s post arose after former Mayor Taron Margaryan announced resignation in a message addressed to Yerevan residents. The Republican Party that holds majority in the Council of Elders earlier announced a decision to not nominate its candidate for the post as well.
Meanwhile, the only candidate that has been nominated thus far is Zaruhi Postanjyan, the head of “Yerkir Tsirani” faction in the Yerevan Council of Elders.
