Yerevan city council fails to elect mayor amid lack of quorum
The Yerevan Council of Elders failed to elect today a new mayor for Armenia’s capital today due to a lack of quorum.
Only five municipal council members, including Deputy Mayor Kamo Areyan, were present at today’s session.
First, Areyan announced a 30-minute break to declare afterwards that the Council of Elders fell short of securing the necessary quorum to hold the voting.
Zaruhi Postanjyan, the head of Yerkir Tsirani faction in the city council, was the sole candidate nominated for the post.
The Republican Party of Armenia and Yelk factions of the Council of Elders had earlier announced they would not nominate their own candidates and would boycott today's session of the city council.
Speaking to reporters today, Postanjyan unveiled her intention to run for mayor at the snap Yerevan city council elections.
Taron Margaryan stepped down as Yerevan Mayor on 9 July.
