Yerevan Zoo's male tiger dies suddenly
A 17-year-old Amur tiger named Nobel at the Yerevan Zoo has died unexpectedly, the zoo announced Friday.
Born in Kaliningrad Zoo in 2001, Nobel was the oldest male tiger at the zoo that was transferred to Yerevan in 2005 along with her female pair Gerta.
Siberian or Amur tigers are the largest cats in captivity, weighing as much as 660 pounds, according to the Tigers-World website. These tigers live between 10 to 15 years in the wild, but in captivity they can live up to 22 years on average.
“The initial reason of the tiger’s death is explained with old age ailments,” the zoo said in a statement, adding the mortal remain of the tiger will be cremated after due medical examination.
