Armenia’s SIS presses charges against CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov
The Special Investigative Committee of Armenia has pressed charges against the acting Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Yuri Khachaturov as part of the criminal investigation into the so-called tragic events of March 1, 2008 - the post presidential election crackdown in Armenia during which eight civilians and two police officers were killed.
To note, Khachaturov served as the Chief of the Yerevan garrison at a time of March 1, 2008, and on March 15 was appointed by the then President Robert Kocharyan as Chief of General Staff of Armenia’s Armed Forces.
The criminal case was initiated according Part 1 of Article 300 of the RA Criminal Code, that qualifies Khachaturov’s actions as aimed at “overthrowing of constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia.”
The SIS also petitioned the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction to issue arrest warrant for Khachaturov.
Earlier the SIS announced that it had charged Armenian former president Robert Kocharyan and
then Defense Minister Mikael Harutyunyan on the grounds of “breaching the constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia” with illegally mobilizing Armenia’s Armed Forces against peaceful demonstrators during the indicated events.
Note: Everyone charged with alleged crime offence shall be presumed innocent until proved guilty according to law.
