Kocharyan’s lawyers set to appeal the court decision
The lawyers of Armenia’s ex-president Robert Kocharian who is in custody charged with “overthrowing the constitutional order in the country” are set to appeal the court decision over the ex-president’s detention measure.
As one of the lawyers Aram Orbelyan stated at a press conference on Saturday, they will take every legal measure to reverse the ruling of the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction.
To remind, the court ruled late on Friday to arrest Robert Kocharyan for two months. The former president was taken into custody from the court hall, accused of “overthrowing the constitutional order in the country with a group of people” in the scope of the criminal investigation into the post-election crackdown following the presidential elections of 2008 during which eight civilians and two police officers were killed.
Orbelyan described the brought charges as “ridiculous” and “unfounded,” referring to the absence of logical connection between the Article 300-1 of the Criminal Code and the available evidence about Kocharyan’s actions that could be constituted as offence under the respective article.
