Actor, comedian Hayk Marutyan named Civil Contract party’s candidate for Yerevan mayor
Popular Armenian actor and comedian Hayk Marutyan, better known as 'Kargin Hayko', has been nominated as a candidate for the post of Yerevan mayor by the Civil Contract party led by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The board of the party considered the candidacy of four members at Sunday’s meeting, picking Marutyan as its candidate after all, Alen Simonyan, a member of the party, told reporters.
He added this was the only topic set for discussion, with no issue of possible participation in the elections jointly with Yelk faction discussed during yesterday’s meeting.
The municipal elections are scheduled for September.
Former Mayor Taron Margaryan stepped down on 9 July amid strong public pressure.
At a special session on July 16, the Council of Elders fell short of securing the necessary quorum to elect a new mayor.
