Russian deputy defense minister refutes media allegations on halting arms sales to Armenia
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin denies the Russian media reports suggesting Moscow may halt weapons supplies to Armenia under the loan agreement worth $100 million.
“That information is untrue,” the Russian official told reporters at Armenia’s Military-Sports Training College after Monte Melkonian, reports Armenpress.
Asked to comment on the situation around Secretary General of the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Yuri Khachaturov, charged over the 2008 post-election violence in Yerevan, the deputy defense minister said Armenia ‘is conducting justice.’
Khachaturov, a retired army general, is charged with overthrowing the constitutional order (Article 300.1, Criminal Code of Armenia) in 2008 in the scope of an investigation into the so-called March 1 events – the post-presidential election crackdown in 2008, which left eight civilians and two police officers dead. He was released from custody on bail last Friday.
After several statements following these developments, the Russian media alleged that Moscow may halt $100 million worth arms sales to Armenia.
