Prosecutor General’s Office receives MP-backed petition to change Kocharyan’s measure of restraint
The Prosecutor General’s Office of Armenia has already received a petition signed by 45 lawmakers calling for a change in the measure of restraint against second President Robert Kocharyan charged with usurping power in the period of March 2008 post-election unrest.
“We have received [the petition]. It is under discussion at the moment,” Arevik Khachatryan, the head of the Public Relations Department of the Prosecutor General’s Office, told Panorama.am.
Earlier, Victor Soghomonyan, who heads the ex-president’s office, said the document has also been signed by Speaker Ara Babloyan, as well as by the two vice speakers of the parliament.
The majority of signatures belong to the MPs of the former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), who have initiated the petition. Some lawmakers from the Armenian Revolutionary Federation have also signed the document.
Kocharyan is arrested for two months. Armenia’s Special Investigative Service has officially charged him with “overthrowing the constitutional order in the country with a group of people” in the scope of the criminal investigation into the 2008 post-election crackdown in Armenia, which left eight civilians and two police officers dead.
