Jar burials discovered during archaeological excavations in Artsakh’s Tigranakert
Archaeologists have unearthed funerary jars during excavations in Artsakh’s ancient town of Tigranakert (burials in jars was a common practice in ancient times), Armine Hayrapetyan, the head of the state service for the protection of historical environment, told Artsakhpress.
She says the excavations have been carried out through the financial support of Russian-Armenian philanthropist Artem Kocharyan, Panorama.am reports.
“It becomes clear from the size of jars that one of them was intended for a child. That jar features hunting and other images,” she said.
The official says new archaeological finds are yet to be restored, and the experts need to thoroughly study them to be able to make clear statements.
“I can one state that they date back to the period from the 1st century B.C. to the 1st century A.D. Moreover, a similar jar is displayed at the geological museum,” Hayrapetyan said, adding the archaeological excavations launched in Tigranakert from 10 July are set to continue until 17-18 August.
