Armenia’s ex-deputy PM not charged based on WikiLeaks info, SIS chief says
There was sufficient evidence to level charges against former Deputy Prime Minister Armen Gevorgyan on the scope of the criminal case investigating the circumstances behind the March 2008 events in capital Yerevan, Chairman of Armenia’s Special Investigative Service (SIS) Sasun Khachatryan said today.
Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, he insisted the ex-deputy PM, who served as the secretary of the National Security Council during the March 1 events, has not been charged on the basis of the WikiLeaks information.
“A person cannot be charged on the basis of a WikiLeaks cable,” he said. “The grounds for involving a person as a defendant are the sufficient combination of evidence on his crime.”
“If a person has been charged, it means there have been proofs obtained in accordance with the procedure set by the Criminal Procedure Code,” he added.
Armen Gevorgyan has been charged with ‘obstructing the administrative justice’ in the wake of Armenia’s 2008 presidential election under Article 332.1 of the Criminal Code.
