CEPA and visa liberation issues should be raised in talks with Merkel, analyst suggests
The South Caucasus visit of the German Councilor is of introductory nature and is designed for the high-ranking official to get familiarized with the new leadership of Armenia, Director at the International Center for Human Development (ICHD) Tevan Poghosyan told Panorama.am when asked to comment on expectations from the Councilor’s visit to Armenia.
“Armenia and Germany cooperate on different spheres, business, education, military sphere (Armenian peacekeepers carry out service within the northern command unit under the German command of NATO’s Resolute Support Mission in Afghanistan) among them. Apart from that, we should note that the German government provides international support through KfW and other channels to Armenia for reforms,” Poghosyan said, pointing to the need to exert every effort to increase the number of German organizations operating in Armenia enable them with even wider opportunities.
The ICHD Director noted that today Germany is the main driving force of the European Union and while on trip to Armenia, Merkel should be once again reminded of the EU-Armenia Comprehensive and Enhanced Partnership Agreement (CEPA) and the emanating visa liberation issues.
“We should also consider that Germany is a member of the Minsk Group that has always kept balanced stance on the settlement of the Artsakh issue, except the recent reports about a German military firm arranging arms sale to Azerbaijan. All these matters should be raised at today’s meeting,” Poghosyan said.
