Merkel’s Yerevan visit can make a difference in Armenian-German relations – analyst
German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s recent visit to Armenia can bring about substantial changes in Armenian-German relations, political scientist Narine Dilbaryan told a news conference on Monday.
She expressed conviction Armenia managed to prove itself as a country with open society during Merkel’s trip, which, according to her, has deeply impressed the German leader.
According to the analyst, Merkel was well informed and prepared before paying a visit to Armenia. “This was a very remarkable visit conducted in a friendly atmosphere,” she stressed.
Political scientist Edgar Arakelyan, in attendance of the conference, hailed Merkel’s Yerevan visit as ‘historic and cognitive’, attaching special importance to the chancellor’s promise that Germany, as a EU country, would spare no effort to contribute to the implementation of the Armenia-EU agreement.
“As for the economic aspect of the visit, I think various programs have been introduced regarding Armenia. However, the most important thing is not their presentation, but rather their consistent implementation,” he said, expressing hope for a closer Armenian-German economic ties.
Political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan, however, claims Merkel’s Caucasus trip 'was not historic and had no supernatural significance.' “This was rather a ceremonial, cognitive event planned a long time ago still by the former authorities. The visit did not produce major results in none of the three South Caucasus countries,” he noted.
According to him, each of the three states had different approaches toward Merkel’s tour. With Georgia eyeing NATO membership and Azerbaijan gas and oil exports to Europe, Armenia did not ‘ask’ anything from the German leader, which ‘was a successful move by the new authorities.’
He praised Merkel’s invitation to Armenian prime minister to Berlin, predicting it will take place. The analyst also spoke about the Armenia-EU visa liberation process touched upon by the German chancellor, adding the talks on the matter are underway for a long time.
