Armenian football legend Alyosha Abrahamyan dies at 73
A legendary goalkeeper of Ararat 73 football club of Soviet Armenia, Alyosha Abrahamyan passed away on Sunday, 26 August, at the age of 73.
In a Facebook post, reporter, filmmaker Karen Kocharyan said the former footballer had suffered from a long-time heart disease.
“He would turn 73 just in two days. Instead of congratulating you, we will have to say goodbye to you probably on that day…I will never forget you,” he wrote.
Born on 28 August 1945 in Gyumri (previously Leninakan), Abrahamyan was a goalkeeper of Ararat 73 legendary club, which won the football championship trophy of the Soviet Union in 1973. He was the silver medallist of the 1971 and 1976 championships. In 1973 and 1975, he became the USSR cup-holder.
He played a total of 276 matches for Yerevan’s Ararat team. After finishing his performances as a goalkeeper, he started a coaching career.
Abrahamyan was awarded with Armenia’s First Degree Medal for Services Rendered to Homeland on 10 October 2013 for his significant contribution to the development of Armenian football and his brilliant achievements.
