Environmentalists protest against new Sevan Lake bill outside parliament
A group of environmentalists have gathered outside the parliament building to protest against the new bill proposing an additional water intake from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes.
The Armenian National Assembly convened an extraordinary session on Tuesday to discuss the draft law on making supplements to the law on approving the programs toward the restoration, preservation, reproduction and use of the ecosystem of Lake Sevan.
“We do not expect much from today’s session. We will continue our struggle regardless of what happens inside,” environmentalist Silva Adamyan told reporters.
On August 23, the government approved the proposed law suggesting to increase water intake from Lake Sevan for irrigation purposes from 170 million cubic meters to up to 210 million cubic meters in 2018.
