Armenia to have 100 MW solar power plants by 2020 – minister
Solar power plants with a total capacity of 100 megawatts will be built in Armenia by 2020, Minister of Energy Infrastructures and Natural Recourses Artur Grigoryan told reporters on Wednesday, summing up his 100 days in office.
According to him, renewable energy is a priority for Armenia and has a serious strategic significance.
“It stems from the fact that we are doing our best to have less dependence on other energy resources. Thus, the development of renewable energy is important for us,” he said.
Stressing the need to develop solar energy in Armenia given the country’s favourable geographic location, Grigoryan unveiled plans of his ministry to submit a proposal to the Public Services Regulatory Commission for the construction of 100 MW solar power stations by 1 January 2020.
According to the latest figures released by Armenia’s Statistical Committee, the country generated 2 million kilowatt-hours of solar energy from January to June this year, with a total of 2,440 solar panels produced in the first half-year.
