Armenia marks Knowledge Day
September 1 is observed in numerous countries, including in Armenia, as the Day of Knowledge and Schooling, marking the start of the new academic year for schoolchildren and students.
September 1 is traditionally marked as a special holiday in the country, according to the Armenian law on holidays and memorial days. It was officially declared as Knowledge day in the Soviet period in October 1980s.
Armenian schools will welcome some 39,000 first graders this year, according to the Ministry of Education and Science.
Today, Minister of Education and Science Arayik Harutyunyan will pay a visit to Sardarapat village school in Armenia’s Armavir region to congratulate the school staff and students on the Knowledge Day. Meantime, other members of the Armenian government are also expected to attend open classes at different schools on Saturday and Monday.
