662 observers from local NGOs accredited to monitor Yerevan municipal elections
662 observers from 8 local NGOs have accredited as of September 8 to engage in election monitoring processes during the Yerevan municipal elections set on September 23. As Panorama.am learnt from the Central Electoral Commission of Armenia (CEC), the date for accreditation and making amendments to the lists of accredited observers expired on September 8.
To remind, the campaign of the snap elections to the Yerevan City Council has officially launched today. The election campaign will conclude on 21 September. 12 political forces, including 4 blocs and 8 parties, are running in the elections. The former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), which holds majority in the parliament, unveiled its decision on 28 August not to take part in the elections.
The need for snap elections arose after ex-mayor Taron Margaryan stepped down on 9 July amid strong public pressure. At a special session on July 16, the City Council fell short of securing the necessary quorum to elect a new mayor.
