Municipal election campaign launches in Yerevan
The campaign of the snap elections to the Yerevan City Council has officially launched in Yerevan, Armenia’s capital, on Monday, 10 September. The election campaign will conclude on 21 September.
12 political forces, including 4 blocs and 8 parties, are running in the elections. The former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), which holds majority in the parliament, unveiled its decision on 28 August not to take part in the elections.
The municipal elections are slated for September 23. Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) has invited representatives of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to observe the elections.
Ex-Mayor Taron Margaryan stepped down on 9 July amid strong public pressure. At a special session on July 16, the City Council fell short of securing the necessary quorum to elect a new mayor.
