Pashinyan: Azerbaijan needs to normalize relations with Armenia if it wants to join CSTO
Everyone is probably aware of the fact that a decision on Azerbaijan’s possible membership to the Russia-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) cannot be taken without Armenia’s consent, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told the Kommersant newspaper of Russia in an interview.
“You are aware of the kind of relations existing between Armenia and Azerbaijan,” Pashinyan said. “Every day, we hear threats addressed to Armenia from Azerbaijan. I believe our stance on this matter will stem from it.”
The PM stressed the need for Azerbaijan to start normalizing its relations with Armenia before eyeing a membership to the organization.
“I believe, if Azerbaijan wants to achieve such an objective, it should first of all start working on the normalization of relations with Armenia,” he said.
Earlier, an acting spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Anna Naghdalyan unveiled Armenia’s plans to exercise its right to veto in the event of Azerbaijan's application to join the CSTO and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
CSTO members are Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
