NSS and SIS heads ready to step down ‘upon public demand’
The Chief of the Armenian National Security Service (NSS) Artur Vanetsyan and the Head of the Special Investigative Service (SIC) Sasun Khachatryan are ready to submit resignation if there is a public demand. The statement was made on Tuesday in Yerevan during the press conference of the both following the scandalous recording of the wiretapped conversation between the two was uploaded to internet.
In the recorded audio the two high-level officials informally discuss the criminal investigation into the so-called March 1 events - the post presidential election crackdown in 2008 during which eight civilians and two police officers were killed.
To note, in the scope of the investigation former President Robert Kocharyan and acting Secretary General of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Yuri Khachaturov are charged according to the Part 1 of Article 300 of the RA Criminal Code for actions aimed at “overthrowing of constitutional order of the Republic of Armenia.”
“I am not clinging to the post of the NSS Chief, however, I think there is much for me to do. The time when the demand to step down comes at the demand of the public and my political leader, I will resign,” Vanetsyan said.
“Whenever there is a public demand that all of us can see, I will submit resignation,” Sasun Khachatryan added.
Meanwhile both claimed that publishing of the wiretapped conversation was aimed at derailing the activities of the institutions they head.
