The upcoming elections to Yerevan mayor are elections between ‘revolution’ and ‘counterrevolution’, Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan said on Tuesday night as he addressed the campaign rally of My Step bloc in a Yerevan district.

“This mayoral election is an election of bright and dark forces. The mayoral election is an election between revolution and counterrevolution, since numerous political forces that pretend to be our allies, supporters of the revolution and even my friends, have flirted and continue to flirt with the counterrevolution,” he stressed.

Commenting on the recent wiretapped telephone conversation between the heads of National Security Service and the Special Investigation Service, in which they discussed the ongoing investigation into the March 2008 postelection crackdown in Yerevan, the PM ruled out any ‘illegal and political’ influence on the probe, as well as the activities of the courts.

He pointed out to numerous cases when judges themselves contact him to find out what to do regarding various criminal cases, while he refuses to give orders to the judiciary.   

“I give a maximally neutral reply in the given case,” he said. “Who does not know that the full political responsibility of these criminal cases lies with me? If it is not so, why these criminal cases failed to be initiated before? Why were they concealed?” he said.

Pashinyan stressed they are fighting for the truth and rule of law, headed by Armenian citizens.
