Yerevan observes pre-election silence ahead of municipal elections
Armenian capital Yerevan is observing pre-election silence Saturday ahead of the municipal elections slated for Sunday, September 23. Under the Electoral Code of Armenia, pre-election campaigning and political advertising are banned the day before the vote. On the Day of Silence, candidates and parties are not allowed to hold rallies, meetings or distribute leaflets.
Twelve political forces, including eight parties and four alliances are competing with party lists for 65 eligible seats in city council that will elect Yerevan mayor.
The political forces running in the elections are: Civil Contract, Prosperous Armenia, Yerkir Tsirani, Armenian Revolutionary Federation, Heritage, Democratic Way, Reformists, Pan-Armenian National Movement Hayk, Orinats Yerkir Parties, as well as Bright bloc and Yerevan Society initiative.
The former ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) is not running in the elections.
662 observers from 8 local NGOs have accredited to engage in election monitoring processes during the elections.
