Artsakh Ombudsman steps down
Artsakh’s Human Rights Defender (Ombudsman) Ruben Melikyan has today announced his decision to resign, he said in a post on Facebook.
“Yesterday, we released the special report of the Artsakh Ombudsman on the facts of Armenophobia in Azerbaijan, thus basically completing our fact finding mission which was launched on the 2016 April war,” he wrote.
Melikyan says he made a personal decision to quit the post still nearly two months ago, but reserves himself the right to execute it now when the report is published.
“I currently picture myself outside the state system and in the human rights protections sector. I have always attached importance to this mission as an unbiased and righteous activity,” he explained.
Melikyan thanked everyone for entrusting him with the honor and responsibility of being Artsakh’s Ombudsman, expressing gratitude to his staff and all those who have worked with him and supported his office to implement numerous programs.
He pledged to often visit Artsakh and to do his best to help the country.
