My Step bloc gains 57 seats in Yerevan City Council
Armenia’s Central Electoral Commission (CEC) convened a sitting on Sunday to sign a final protocol on the snap elections to the Yerevan City Council held on 23 September.
CEC Chairman Tigran Mukuchyan reminded that a total of 370,368 voters out of 848,343 cast ballots at 475 polling stations in the municipal elections.
He also said that the commission had received no application on invalidating the election results.
CEC declared the Yerevan City Council as elected, with the following distribution of mandates: My Step bloc – 57 seats, Prosperous Armenia Party – 5 seats and Luys (Light) bloc – 3 seats.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s My Step bloc, led by popular actor and producer Hayk Marutyan, has won a landslide victory in the City Council elections, garnering 81,05% of the votes.
The Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) came the second with 6,95% votes, followed by Luys alliance, which collected 4,99% votes.
The other nine political forces running in the elections failed to secure enough votes to make their way to the City Council. Yerevan Community alliance received 0,69% of the votes, Yerevantsiner (Yerevan residents) – 0,82%, Yerkir Tsirani party – 1,39%, Heritage party – 0.75%, Democratic Way party – 0,22%, Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D) party – 1,62%, Hayk party – 0,19%, Reformists – 0.22% and Orinats Yerkir – 1.09%.
Under the Armenian law, parties need to collect at least 6 percent of the votes to secure their places in the City Council, while alliances need to gain 8%. However, the law also envisages that at least three political forces must be represented in the council.
